So you want to split jerk?

Here is a short list of things to do before doing a split jerk for a beginner.

  1. Do foot work drills for an entire week! Start with static drills like Press in Split, and work towards dynamic ones like Drop to Split.
  2. Do the Push press and power jerk to practice the dip drive instead of the Split Jerk.  These will tell you if you are dipping forward or not.  Focus on a fast change of direction at the bottom of the dip drive.  Play around with fast-short dips, and longer-smoother dips to see which one works best for you.
  3. Watch and listen to good weightlifters doing split jerks.  In person is the best, but videos will work.  Hearing and seeing the movement will help you pick up on the rhythm and the overall movement.
